If you are staying for several weeks, working remotely or expect to use a lot of data, the local tourist eSIMs from my.t and Emtel can offer much better value because they include unlimited data and a Mauritian mobile number.

The current tourist option is valid for 30 days and includes unlimited 5G data, unlimited local SMS and Rs200 of airtime for calls. This makes it particularly attractive for visitors staying for several weeks or anyone who expects to stream a lot of video, work remotely or use their phone as a hotspot.

Tourists need to provide identification and accommodation details when registering. The connection can be arranged through my.t, Telecom Shops and facilities at SSR International Airport. There is also an eSIM self-service option at the airport, which makes the process relatively straightforward. The only reason I would still prefer Airalo for a short holiday is that with Airalo you can have everything completely ready before your aircraft lands.

Emtel Tourist eSIM

Emtel has a similar tourist package, available as either a physical SIM or eSIM, with unlimited 5G mobile data for 30 days, unlimited local SMS and Rs200 airtime. Emtel is therefore another very good choice for visitors who want large amounts of data or need a local number. Tourists can arrange the connection through Emtel and collect or activate it after arrival.

Interestingly, Airalo itself uses Emtel as its primary Mauritius network. The difference is mainly in the product you are buying. Airalo packages the connection as a convenient international travel eSIM, while buying directly from Emtel gives you a local tourist plan with far more data and local phone functionality. For a ten-day holiday using a few gigabytes, I would still favour Airalo. For a month-long stay or frequent hotspot use, I would go directly with Emtel or my.t.

What about Holafly?

Holafly is another well-known international eSIM provider and offers unlimited-data plans for Mauritius. It is easy to set up and can be useful for travellers who specifically want unlimited data without dealing with a local operator. However, unlimited tourist packages from my.t and Emtel can offer considerably better value, so I would personally place Airalo ahead of Holafly for a normal short trip and recommend the local providers for heavy data users.

How Much Data Do You Really Need?

Most tourists probably need less mobile data than they think. Hotels, villas, restaurants and shopping centres generally provide Wi-Fi, so your eSIM may mainly be used while driving, exploring beaches, using maps or messaging people. Someone who mainly uses Google Maps, WhatsApp and basic browsing might use only 1–3GB per week, while regular Instagram and Facebook use could push that closer to 3–5GB. Heavy video consumption, frequent uploads or tethering a laptop can easily take usage beyond 10GB and make an unlimited local package much more attractive.

A couple visiting Mauritius for ten days and mostly using hotel Wi-Fi probably does not need two unlimited 30-day local plans. A smaller Airalo package on each phone may be more convenient. Setting Up an eSIM for Mauritius

Before buying anything, make sure your phone supports eSIM and is unlocked from your mobile carrier. One quick check used by local operators is to dial *#06#. If your device displays an EID number, it supports eSIM technology. Carrier locking is separate, however, so a phone can technically support eSIM while still being unable to accept a connection from another provider.

With Airalo, the process is usually straightforward: choose Mauritius in the Airalo app or website, select your package, purchase the eSIM and install it while you still have Wi-Fi.
