The 2027 academic year begins on Monday, 11 January 2027, with the admission of new pupils to Grades 1, 7 and 10. All classes resume the following day, Tuesday, 12 January. The first term ends on 26 March, followed by two weeks of Easter holidays. The winter school holidays fall between July and August, and the third term ends on Thursday, 28 October 2027.

Mauritius School Calendar 2027: All three terms
The 2027 academic year is divided into three terms. The dates were confirmed in the Cabinet decisions of 30 October 2026 for primary and secondary schools.
| School term | Start date | End date |
|---|---|---|
| First term | Monday, 11 January 2027 | Friday, 26 March 2027 |
| Second term | Monday, 12 April 2027 | Friday, 9 July 2027 |
| Third term | Monday, 9 August 2027 | Thursday, 28 October 2027 |
Although the first term officially begins on 11 January, that day is reserved for the admission of new entrants to Grades 1, 7 and 10. The general resumption of classes is scheduled for Tuesday, 12 January 2027. Parents should check any additional admission arrangements or reporting times communicated by their child’s school.
When do schools reopen in Mauritius in January 2027?
School reopening takes place over two days in January 2027, depending on the pupil’s grade. This distinction is particularly important for families with children starting primary school or moving to a new stage of secondary education.
Monday, 11 January 2027: Admission of new entrants
The first day is designated for the admission of new pupils entering Grade 1, Grade 7 and Grade 10. This allows schools to welcome pupils starting a new stage of their education and organise the necessary admission arrangements. Exact reporting times, orientation activities and any documents required on the day should be confirmed directly with the school.
Tuesday, 12 January 2027: All classes resume
The general reopening for all primary and secondary classes is on Tuesday, 12 January 2027. For most returning pupils, this will be the first regular school day of the year. Parents arranging school vans, bus travel or after-school care should use this date when planning the January return.
Families with children moving from primary to secondary school may also find our guide to public and private schools in Mauritius useful for understanding the different types of schools and how the local education system is organised.
Mauritius School Holidays 2027: Easter and winter break dates
The Cabinet calendar confirms two weeks of Easter holidays after the first term and four weeks of winter holidays after the second term. Using the official term-ending and reopening dates, the complete breaks, including weekends, work out as follows.
| Holiday period | Dates | Schools reopen |
|---|---|---|
| Easter holidays | 27 March to 11 April 2027 | Monday, 12 April |
| Winter holidays | 10 July to 8 August 2027 | Monday, 9 August |
| End-of-year holidays | From 29 October 2027 | 2028 reopening date not yet announced |
These holiday dates include the weekends immediately after the end of each term and before the next one begins. They represent the periods when regular classes are not scheduled under the announced calendar.
Easter school holidays 2027
The first term ends on Friday, 26 March 2027. Pupils then have their Easter break from Saturday, 27 March until Sunday, 11 April, before returning for the second term on Monday, 12 April. That gives families 16 consecutive calendar days between terms when weekends are included, although the official calendar describes the break as two weeks.
This is a useful period for arranging a family trip or childcare, particularly for working parents who may need to coordinate annual leave. The Easter break falls during the transition towards the cooler months in Mauritius, although March and early April can still be warm and humid.
Winter school holidays 2027
The winter holidays begin after the second term ends on Friday, 9 July 2027. Schools remain closed for the scheduled break from Saturday, 10 July to Sunday, 8 August, with classes resuming on Monday, 9 August. This provides 30 consecutive calendar days between terms, including weekends.
July and August are part of the Mauritian winter, with cooler temperatures and generally less humidity than the summer months. For families planning outings, the north and west coasts often provide more sheltered conditions than the windier east and south-east. Our Mauritius in July and August guide covers the weather, suitable beaches and activities during this period.
The winter break is also worth keeping in mind when booking accommodation or organising family activities. Popular attractions and holiday destinations can be busier when local children are off school, especially during weekends.
End-of-year school holidays 2027
The third and final term ends on Thursday, 28 October 2027, making Friday, 29 October the first day after the academic year. That Friday is also the Divali public holiday, followed by All Saints Day on Monday, 1 November and the Arrival of Indentured Labourers public holiday on Tuesday, 2 November. This creates an extended festive break immediately after the school year finishes.
The Cabinet announcement does not specify when schools will reopen in January 2028. Families planning travel towards the end of the year should wait for the next academic calendar before assuming a particular return date.

Public holidays during the Mauritius school year 2027
School holidays and public holidays are separate, so parents should consider both when planning the year. Several national public holidays fall on weekdays during the 2027 school terms, while others fall on weekends or during the scheduled Easter break.
These are the main weekday public holidays falling during school terms:
| Public holiday | Date | School term |
|---|---|---|
| Thaipoosam Cavadee | Friday, 22 January | First term |
| Abolition of Slavery | Monday, 1 February | First term |
| Eid-Ul-Fitr* | Wednesday, 10 March | First term |
| Independence and Republic Day | Friday, 12 March | First term |
| Public holiday following Ganesh Chaturthi | Monday, 6 September | Third term |
*The date of Eid-Ul-Fitr is subject to official confirmation, as the celebration depends on the visibility of the moon.
Ougadi falls on Wednesday, 7 April 2027, during the Easter school holidays. Labour Day falls on Saturday, 1 May, while Ganesh Chaturthi itself falls on Sunday, 5 September. Under the amended Public Holidays Act, Monday, 6 September is an additional public holiday.
Public holidays may affect school attendance, but parents should always follow notices from their child’s school, particularly where special activities, examination arrangements or timetable changes are concerned. You can also check the Mauritius calendar on Creole Mauritius for public holiday dates and other calendar information.
Planning ahead for the 2027 school year
Having the school calendar several months in advance makes it easier to organise the practical side of family life. January reopening can be particularly busy for parents with children starting Grade 1 or moving into secondary school. Uniforms, textbooks, stationery, admission documents and transport arrangements often need attention before classes begin, especially when several children attend different schools.
For pupils travelling by school van or bus, it is sensible to confirm pickup times and routes before each term starts. If your child is entering a new school, check where they need to report on the first day and whether the school has issued separate instructions for new entrants. Parents relying on childcare during the Easter or winter holidays can use the confirmed dates to plan arrangements well in advance.
Families considering a change of school should also check admission deadlines separately from the general academic calendar. These are not listed in the Cabinet announcement. If you’re comparing different education options, our guide to public versus private schools in Mauritius explains the main differences, while parents considering overseas curricula can read about international schools in Mauritius.
Does the 2027 calendar apply to private and international schools?
The Cabinet announcement provides the national academic calendar for primary and secondary schools in Mauritius. Schools following the national education system generally use these dates, but parents should still confirm the arrangements published by their individual schools.
International and some independent schools may follow different academic calendars, particularly those using French, British or International Baccalaureate programmes. Their term dates, examination schedules and holidays may differ from the national school calendar. If your child attends one of these schools, use the institution’s own academic calendar rather than assuming the January to October schedule applies.
