Malenga View Point: The Stairway to Heaven

December 3, 2025

Let’s be honest for a second. When most people plan a trip to our beautiful island, they picture themselves lying horizontal on a beach, a cocktail in one hand and a samosa in the other. And while we fully support that lifestyle here at Creole Mauritius, sometimes you need to trade the flip-flops for sneakers and work for your views.

Enter Malenga View Point.

Hidden away in the Moka District near the village of La Laura-Malenga, this spot is what travel brochures like to call a “hidden gem.” In reality, “hidden gem” is usually code for “you might get lost finding it,” but don’t worry. We are here to guide you to one of the most stunning, peaceful, and thigh-burning spots on the island.

If you are looking to expand your travel adventures beyond the coastline, this is it.

The Geography (Or, Where on Earth Am I?)

Malenga View Point offers a front-row seat to some of the most dramatic scenery in Mauritius. We are talking about the kind of views that make you want to quote poetry or at least post a really pretentious Instagram caption.

From the top, you get a clear shot of the iconic Pieter Both mountain. You know the one; it looks like a giant balancing a rock on its head, defying all laws of physics and anxiety. You also look down upon the village of Crève Coeur. Fun fact: Crève Coeur translates to “Heartbreak.” We are not sure if it was named that because of a tragic romance or because of the cardio required to hike out of there, but the village itself is charming and lush.

How to Get There (The Quest Begins)

Unlike some of the more urban spots on the island, you cannot just hop on a tram to get here. While we have a great Mauritius Metro Guide for city hopping, the Metro Express sadly does not climb mountains (yet).

To reach Malenga, you need a car or a very patient taxi driver. You will head towards Crève Coeur village. A word of warning to the nervous drivers: the access roads can be a bit… cozy. By cozy, we mean narrow enough to make you suck in your stomach when another car passes.

Since you will likely need Google Maps to navigate these winding roads without ending up in someone’s sugarcane field, make sure you are connected. Check out our guide on the cheapest e-sims for travel to Mauritius so you don’t lose signal right when the road splits three ways.

The Climb: 375 Steps to Glory

Okay, here is the part where we discuss your fitness levels.

To get to the actual viewing kiosk, you have to conquer a stairway. It is not just a few steps; it is over 375 steps. This is not a casual stroll; this is nature’s StairMaster.

But before you click away and decide to stay at the hotel buffer, listen to this: the path is absolutely beautiful. It is lush, green, and often lined with local fruit trees. Depending on the season, you might spot wild guavas (goyaves de chine) along the way. Free snacks? Yes, please.

The climb takes just under 30 minutes for the average human. If you are a hiking pro who has already conquered the best hikes in Mauritius, you will breeze up in 15. If you spent last night enjoying too much of our local food and nightlife, it might take you 45. No judgment here.

The Reward

Once you reach the top, the burning sensation in your calves vanishes (mostly). The viewpoint has a small kiosk where you can sit, catch your breath, and realize the effort was worth it.

It is peaceful. Unlike the popular beaches that can get crowded, Malenga is serene. It is just you, the wind, the mountains, and maybe a stray dog looking for a sandwich crust. It is the perfect spot for photography, meditation, or just staring into the distance looking mysterious.

A Bit of History (Because We Are Cultured)

We love a bit of backstory here in our Culture section. The name “La Laura-Malenga” actually comes from a 19th-century sugar estate established around 1859.

Back then, this area was all about the sugar industry. Today, the chimneys are cold, and the area has transitioned from an industrial hub to an eco-tourism hotspot. It is a nice reminder of how the island has evolved from colonial plantations to a place that celebrates its natural beauty.

When to Go

If you are planning your trip and wondering about the weather, check out our guide on the best time to visit Mauritius.

For Malenga specifically, aim for the cooler, drier months between May and December. Why? Because 375 steps become a slip-and-slide adventure during the rainy season (January to April). Mud is not a good look, and gravity is unforgiving.

Also, try to go early in the morning. The air is crisp, the light is soft, and you avoid the midday sun roasting you on the ascent.

Speak Like a Local at the Top

You didn’t think you would get through a blog post without a lesson, did you? When you reach the top, breathless and sweaty, here are a few phrases from our Mauritian Creole lessons to help you express yourself:

  1. “Mo krazé net!” (I am completely exhausted!)
  2. “Vue-la bien serye.” (The view is amazing/serious.)
  3. “Eski ena de l’eau?” (Is there any water?)

If you want to expand your vocabulary before you tackle the mountain, check out our vocabulary lists or do some practice exercises.

Practical Tips for Survival

  • Shoes: Do not wear flip-flops. We see you thinking about it. Don’t. Wear sturdy shoes.
  • Hydration: Bring water. There is no vending machine at step 200.
  • Parking: There is no dedicated “Malenga Parking Lot.” You will need to park near Crève Coeur or along the road. Be respectful of residents’ driveways.
  • Respect: Take your trash with you. Let’s keep Malenga beautiful.

Final Thoughts

Malenga View Point is a fantastic addition to any vacation plan, especially if you are following our 7-day Mauritius itinerary and want to squeeze in some nature between beach days. It fits perfectly into a balanced lifestyle of eating curry and then hiking it off.

So, tie your laces, charge your camera, and get ready to climb. The view is waiting!
