Absolutely nobody, likes paperwork. It is boring, it is confusing, and it feels like eating dry toast without butter while someone reads a dictionary to you. But when the reward at the end of that paperwork is a trip to paradise, suddenly filling out a form feels like the most exciting thing in the world.

You are probably reading this because you are planning a trip to our beautiful island. First of all, excellent choice. You clearly have great taste. Secondly, you are probably worrying about the entry rules. Will they let me in? Do I need a visa? Do I need to promise my firstborn child to the immigration officer?
The good news is that Mauritius is generally very chill about welcoming visitors. We believe in the philosophy of pas tracas (no worries). We want you here. We want you to eat our food, swim in our lagoons, and spend your money at our markets. Therefore, getting into the country is usually as smooth as our famous local rum.
Mauritius maintains a very liberal visa policy compared to many other tropical destinations. In fact, citizens from over 90 countries can just walk in without arranging anything beforehand. Another 70 countries get a visa granted right there at the airport. Only a small handful of nations need to do the hard work of applying in advance. So, unless you are on a specific watchlist (which is between you and your government), there is a very high chance you are already on our “nice list.”
Here is your complete, detailed, and hopefully entertaining guide to Mauritius visa requirements for tourists, organized by continent so you can check your status faster than you can say alouda.

The Basics: Do You Need a Visa?
Before we get into the geography lesson, let us look at the general categories. Most tourists fall into one of five distinct groups. Understanding which group you belong to is the first step to a stress-free holiday.
| Visa Category | What It Means | Number of Countries |
|---|---|---|
| No Visa Required | You are the VIPs. You can enter and stay for up to 90 days (usually) without hassle. | 90 |
| Visa on Arrival (60 Days) | You get your stamp when you land. No prior application needed. Easy peasy. | 70 |
| Visa Required Prior to Travel | You need to apply at an embassy or online before you pack your bags. Do not skip this step! | 14 |
| Visa on Arrival (2 Weeks) | A shorter stay granted at the airport. Enough time to get a tan, but maybe not enough to write a novel. | 6 |
| Other / Restricted | Depends on specific circumstances, diplomatic status, or recent travel history. | Various |
Basically, if you are coming for a standard holiday, you are likely fine. Just make sure your passport is valid for at least 6 months beyond your intended period of stay. This is a golden rule. If your passport expires in 5 months, ayyo (oh no), you are not getting on that plane.
Visa Requirements by Continent
We have broken this down by region because scrolling through an alphabetical list of 195 countries on a tiny phone screen is nobody’s idea of fun. Find your home continent below and see where you stand.
Africa
Africa has the most variety when it comes to rules. We love our neighbors, and we want to encourage regional travel, so many African countries get a free pass. We are part of SADC (Southern African Development Community) and COMESA, which basically means we are part of a big African family that likes to visit each other.
If you are from South Africa, for example, you are practically family. We see so many South Africans here that we sometimes forget which country we are in.
| Country | Visa Requirement |
|---|---|
| South Africa | No visa required |
| Egypt | No visa required |
| Nigeria | Visa: 2 weeks on arrival |
| Kenya | No visa required |
| Rwanda | No visa required |
Most SADC countries get visa-free access. This includes cool places like Botswana, Seychelles, Tanzania, and Zimbabwe. It makes hopping between safari on the mainland and beach time in Mauritius incredibly easy.
However, a few friends like Mali, Somalia, and Sudan need to apply in advance due to security protocols. Also, please note that if you are traveling from certain African countries, you might need a Yellow Fever Vaccination Certificate (more on that in the health section below).
Asia
Asia is huge, and our rules reflect our strong historical and diplomatic relationships there. A huge portion of our population has ancestors from India and China, so naturally, we want our cousins to visit. If you are coming from these major hubs, you can often walk right in.
We love spicy food, so maybe that is why we get along so well with our Asian neighbors.
| Country | Visa Requirement |
|---|---|
| India | No visa required |
| Singapore | No visa required |
| Japan | No visa required |
| Thailand | Visa: 60 days on arrival |
| Malaysia | No visa required |
Developed nations and major economic partners generally have no issues. This includes Saudi Arabia, Russia, South Korea, and Israel.
However, Asia is vast and rules vary. If you are from Pakistan, Laos, North Korea, or Afghanistan, you will need to get a visa before you travel. Do not try your luck at the airport; they will simply put you on the next flight back, and airplane food is not worth eating twice in one day.
Europe
If you are from Europe, congratulations. You basically have a golden ticket. Almost every single European country enjoys visa-free entry. We know you Europeans are desperate to escape your grey skies and freezing winters, so we make it very easy for you to come and thaw out on our beaches.
| Country | Visa Requirement |
|---|---|
| France | No visa required |
| Germany | No visa required |
| Italy | No visa required |
| Spain | No visa required |
| United Kingdom | No visa required |
This applies to all 27 EU member states (Yes, even you, Luxembourg) plus non-EU friends like Switzerland, Norway, and Iceland. You just land, grab your bags, and head straight to the beach bar. It is seamless.
The Americas
From the frozen north of Canada to the tip of Chile, the doors are mostly open for the Americas. We know it is a long flight to get here from that side of the world, so if you are willing to sit in a metal tube for 20+ hours to see us, we are not going to make you do extra paperwork.
Spoiler alert: our beaches are mari bon (very good), and we think they rival the Caribbean. Come and judge for yourself.
| Country | Visa Requirement |
|---|---|
| Brazil | No visa required |
| Mexico | No visa required |
| Canada | No visa required |
| United States | No visa required |
| Chile | No visa required |
If you are from the Caribbean, you are also likely visa-free (island solidarity!). Central American countries like Costa Rica, Panama, and Honduras can usually get a 60-day visa on arrival. It is very straightforward.
Oceania
Our island cousins in the Pacific are always welcome. We share a love for the ocean, rugby (sometimes), and relaxed living. The visa policy here is almost universally open.
| Country | Visa Requirement |
|---|---|
| Australia | No visa required |
| New Zealand | No visa required |
| Fiji | No visa required |
| Samoa | No visa required |
| Papua New Guinea | No visa required |
Whether you are from a big continent like Australia or a small island nation like Tuvalu or Kiribati, you can enter without a visa. Just bring your flip-flops (or thongs, as you weirdly call them).
The Serious Stuff: Who Needs a Visa Beforehand?
Okay, we promised to be funny, but this part is serious. If you are a citizen of the countries listed below, you must obtain a visa before you travel.
This is not a suggestion. This is a rule. If you show up at the airport without one, you will be denied entry. It does not matter if you have a hotel booking or if you promise to be on your best behavior.
Restricted List (Requires Prior Visa):
- Afghanistan
- Bangladesh
- Iraq
- Laos
- Libya
- Mali
- North Korea
- Pakistan
- Palestinian State
- Somalia
- Sudan
- South Sudan
- Syria
- Yemen
How to Apply: If you are on this list, do not panic. You can apply for a visa through the Mauritius Passport and Immigration Office online portal or via your nearest Mauritian Embassy or Consulate. You will need to provide:
- A completed application form.
- Two recent passport-size photos.
- Photocopies of your passport.
- Confirmed hotel booking.
- Return flight ticket.
- Bank statements proving you have funds.
The process usually takes a few weeks, so degaze (hurry up) and apply well in advance of your trip.

What You Actually Need at the Airport (The Checklist)
Even if you are from a visa-free country, you cannot just waltz in like you own the place. Immigration officers have a job to do, and they love their checklists. To ensure you breeze through customs like a VIP, have the following ready:
1. Valid Passport
Your passport must be valid for at least 6 months beyond your date of arrival. Also, make sure you have at least one or two blank pages for the stamp. Officers get grumpy if they have to search for a tiny corner to stamp.
2. Mauritius All-In-One Travel Form
This is the modern way. Gone are the days of scrambling for a pen on the airplane while balancing a tray of food. You need to fill out the Mauritius All-In-One Travel Form. This digital form covers immigration and health declarations.
- Pro Tip: Fill it out online before you fly. You will get a QR code. Screenshot it. When you land, show the QR code to the health officer, and you zoom past the people who forgot to do it.
3. Proof of Accommodation
Where are you sleeping? The officer wants to know.
- Hotel: Have a printed or digital copy of your booking confirmation.
- Villa/Airbnb: Have the address and contact number of the host.
- Family/Friends: If you are staying with your Mauritian Aunty, you need a Letter of Sponsorship from her, along with her ID card copy and proof of address (like a utility bill). Yes, they check.
4. Onward or Return Ticket
You must prove that you plan to leave eventually. Even if you fall in love with the island and want to stay forever (which happens often), you need a ticket showing a departure date within the allowed visa period.
5. Proof of Funds
Legally, you are required to have sufficient funds to cover your stay. The benchmark is usually around USD 100 per day.
- Do they check everyone? No.
- Can they check you? Yes.
- It is rare for them to ask to see your bank balance, but having a credit card or some cash on hand shows you are a legitimate tourist.
If you are wondering how far USD 100 goes in Mauritius (spoiler: it goes pretty far if you eat rotis, but not so far if you drink champagne), check out our Mauritius living cost calculator 2025.
Health Requirements: The Yellow Fever Card
This is a specific rule that catches many travelers off guard. Mauritius is free of Malaria and Yellow Fever, and we want to keep it that way.
If you are traveling from, or have transited for more than 12 hours through, a country with a risk of Yellow Fever transmission (mostly countries in Africa and South America), you MUST present a valid Yellow Fever Vaccination Certificate.
Common countries where this applies: Angola, Benin, Burkina Faso, Burundi, Cameroon, Central African Republic, Congo, Côte d’Ivoire, DRC, Ethiopia, Gabon, Gambia, Ghana, Kenya, Nigeria, Rwanda, Senegal, South Sudan, Sudan, Togo, Uganda, Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Colombia, Ecuador, French Guiana, Panama, Paraguay, Peru, Venezuela.
If you arrive from these places without the certificate, you may be quarantined or refused entry. That is not the tropical vacation you planned.
Customs: What Not to Bring
You have got your visa, your passport, and your QR code. Now, make sure your luggage doesn’t get you in trouble. Mauritius is an island ecosystem, which means we are very protective of our plants and animals.
- Plants and Seeds: Do not bring flowers, seeds, bulbs, or fresh vegetables. We have plenty here.
- Fresh Fruit: Leave the apples and oranges on the plane.
- Animals: Bringing a pet requires a complicated import permit process involving vets and quarantine. Do not just bring your cat in your carry-on.
- Drugs: Mauritius has extremely strict penalties for drug trafficking. Do not risk it. It is serye (serious).
Also, be aware of duty-free limits: 1 liter of spirits and 2 liters of wine or beer per adult. If you bring more, you pay tax.
Getting Married?
A lot of people come here to get hitched. If you are coming for a wedding, the entry rules are the same as for tourists. However, if you are a non-citizen marrying a citizen, the process involves the Civil Status Office. For the ceremony itself, you just need to be legally in the country.
If you are planning your big day, you definitely need to read our guide on getting married in Mauritius to ensure your paperwork is as perfect as your wedding dress.
Staying Longer? Extensions and Premium Visas
So, you arrived for 14 days, but now you are addicted to the beach and never want to wear shoes again. Can you stay?
Visa Extension
If you entered on a tourist visa, you can usually apply to extend your stay up to a maximum of 90 days (or sometimes 180 days per calendar year, depending on nationality).
- Where: You must go to the Passport and Immigration Office in Port Louis.
- When: Apply before your current visa expires. Overstaying is a crime.
- What you need: A valid reason, proof of funds, and a changed flight ticket.
The Premium Visa
For the digital nomads, remote workers, and retirees who want a longer slice of paradise, we have the Premium Visa.
- Validity: One year (renewable).
- Requirement: You must prove you work for a company outside Mauritius or have independent income. You cannot enter the local labor market (i.e., you cannot take a job at the local sugarcane factory).
- Perk: It is free to apply!

Safety and Security
Once you are in, you might be wondering about safety. Is it safe to walk around? Is the water safe to drink? Generally, Mauritius is one of the safest countries in Africa. However, like anywhere, you should be smart. Don’t leave your iPhone on the beach towel while you swim to the horizon.

Conclusion
Mauritius really is one of the most accessible destinations in the world. We make the rules easy because our economy relies on you having a great time. With 90 countries visa-free and 70 more getting visas on arrival, the odds are overwhelmingly in your favor.
So pack your bags, double-check your passport expiry date, and do not forget your sunscreen. The only difficult part of your trip should be choosing between a Phoenix beer or a rum punch at sunset.
If you are ready to book your flights but are unsure about the weather (we have cyclones sometimes!), make sure you check the best time to visit Mauritius. And once you land, you will need a plan so you don’t waste a single second, look at our 7 day Mauritius itinerary for inspiration.
Important Disclaimer: This list was last checked in February 2026. However, government rules, diplomatic moods, and visa lists change faster than the weather in Curepipe (which changes every 5 minutes). We are not responsible if the rules change after we press publish. It is your absolute duty to verify the latest requirements with your airline or the nearest Mauritian embassy before you travel. Do not say we did not warn you!
